Blogmas day 1
December has arrived! We are one day closer to Christmas! As we enter into this wonderful time of the year I would love if you would join me in diving into the meaning behind Christmas as I go through the book of Luke. There are 24 chapters which means by Christmas we will know even more about Jesus’ time on this earth from birth to death.
I am calling this series Blogmas since instead of vlogging my days I am writing them. I will be going through the book of Luke everyday leading up to Christmas with other topics sprinkled in every now and then.
Today we are going to take a journey through LUKE 1!
Go read it for yourself and then come back here to dive into what you read with me!
Alright! Welcome back! Now lets dive into what each section of this chapter says.
Luke 1:1-4
When we start reading, we learn that the writer of Luke wants us to know the accurate account of Jesus by sharing with us their point of view of Jesus’ life on this earth just like everyone else in the Gospels did (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
Luke 1:5-25
When we arrive at these chapters, we learn about Zechariah a Jewish Priest in Judea who was a part of the priestly order Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth. They both were righteous in God’s eyes and carful to obey the Lord’s commands. They seemed to want to make sure that wherever they went in life they were walking after God and not the world.
While Zechariah was in the sanctuary serving God for a week an angel of the Lord came to him and told him his wife would become pregnant in her old age with a son whose name would be called John, and he would prepare the way for the One who would save us all.
Can we stop and look at something I noticed when reading this. In every chapter where an angel comes to someone the angel tells them “Do not be afraid” It jumped out at me today and I just love it. So many times throughout scripture God tells us not to fear, when the angel comes to the people with a word of what is to come they tell them not to fear. We need to trust God’s plans for us with each step we follow Him on.
Okay, back to the chapter. Zechariah and Elizabeth had been praying for a baby for so long and at their old age they didn’t think they could become pregnant any longer as Elizabeth had been Barron their whole marriage. Well God can do the impossible especially when it came to this miracle. When Zechariah heard this, he didn’t believe the angel which resulted in him becoming mute until the birth of his son!
Luke 1:26:38
Moving onto these next chapters we learn that Elizabeth is now in her 6th month of her pregnancy when God sends an angel named Gabriel to Nazareth where Mary was living. Mary was a virgin woman who was recently engaged to be married to Joseph a descendant of King David. The angel came to Mary and told her she is favored by God and would give birth to a son and call His name Jesus. He will reign over all of Israel and His kingdom with NEVER end. How can this happen? Mary had asked the angel. Grabriel answered saying the power of the Holy Spirit will come upon her.
Mary’s response is my favorite. I love her Faith as she responded to the angel “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true” WOW! I want Faith like Mary! We as believers in God can have that same Faith but it’s our decision, are we going to say yes to everything God has planned through even the darkest times?
It is not mentioned in Luke how Joseph reacted to this Word from the Lord, so I wanted to share with you what Scripture says about it back in Matthew 1:18-25. After the angel came to Mary, she told Joseph who was a righteous man and who didn’t want to break off the engagement in public. He didn’t want to stand out from others it sounds like, almost like he cared more about what others thought then what God did in that moment. But as he considered this an angel came to him in a dream and told him all that was told to Mary. That the Holy Spirit would come upon Mary and would give birth to the Son of God. The angel told Joseph that Jesus would come to save His people from their sins!
When Joseph awoke, he took Mary as His wife and believed what the angel had said!
I wonder if Joseph thought Mary wasn’t telling the truth until after God sent an Angel to tell him what had happened.
Luke 1:39-45
A few days after the angel came to Mary, she traveled to Judea to visit her relative Elizabeth. The moment they greet each other the baby in Elizabeths womb is immediately filled with the Holy Spirit jumping for Joy. Elizabeth’s Faith is huge as she tells Mary with full on excitement that God has blessed her above all women. Mary is blessed because she believed that the Lord would do what He said.
Luke 1:46-56
This is the song of praise Mary sang to the Lord as she was staying with Elizabeth 3 months before going back home to Nazareth. Her song is so encouraging as a follower of Jesus dedicated to the Lord. There isn’t anything I can say to summarize it. I encourage you to meditate on in and really take it all in. I am reading it in the NIV Bible.
Luke 1:57-66
It came time for Elizabeth to give birth to John the Baptist and everyone rejoiced with her as they saw how merciful the Lord had been to her and Zechariah. 8 days had past and it came time for them to name their son. Everyone wanted it to be Zechariah but she refused and said it was John. They couldn’t believe it and asked Zechariah what he thought so they gave him something to write with and he said John, in that moment The Lord gave him back the ability to speak! The first thing out of his mouth was praise to the Lord! For God had been so Faithful and answered their prayers in HIS perfect timing.

Luke 1:67-80
After the birth of John the Baptist Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave a prophecy.
A few things jumped out at me with this prophecy Zechariah gave but honestly it is to much to share so I will just share this one verse:
John the Baptist was born with a purpose and that was to prepare the way for Jesus. John baptized with water and told everyone that a man would come and baptize them with the Holy Spirit which we will go over later in scripture.
I pray that today you were encouraged by the chapter we read through in Luke. You are all so amazing and have a beautiful purpose as you follow Jesus. I am so excited to go through the book of Luke with all of you this month.
May you all have a blessed day! Happy Sunday!
